Sometimes, in order to get somewhere we want to go, we use that handy little thing called GPS. The concept is simple – we decide where we want to go, we take a moment to put the coordinates into the app/device, and voila! GPS gives us the most practical route to our destination (most of the time).
The beauty of using GPS is that it keeps us from getting lost, and just as importantly, it keeps us from wasting time, money and energy mucking about in directions we don’t want to go.
So I want to chat about that concept of using GPS, but with a life coach twist.
Because life’s a journey, right? And even though we usually have an idea of where we want to end up, we don’t always know or utilize the best route to take to get there.
May I introduce to you MY version of GPS?
It goes likes this:

The definition of proactive is “to create or control a situation by causing something to happen rather than responding or reacting to it after it has happened”.
Now go back and read that last sentence again, just for effect. . .
Powerful concept, yes? Now let’s take a peek at the savvy part of “Get Proactively Savvy”. Savvy, by definition, means shrewdness and practical knowledge, with the ability to make good judgements.
Using practical knowledge to make good judgements = more desirable outcomes.
(Stay tuned for more Common Sense Math equations . . . 😉 )
Now let’s put it all together:
Getting proactively savvy means utilizing practical knowledge and good judgement to cause something to happen that creates or controls situations, rather than reacting to situations after they have happened.
The following confession may truly reveal the Common Sense McNerd that I am, but Aye, Aye, Aye: that homespun definition of proactively savvy just makes me feel all kinds of warm and fuzzy inside! The fact that I can use my own skills of knowledge and good judgement to help influence or cause things to happen in ways that best suit my needs, (rather than just letting life smack me nilly-willy upside the head) is an amazingly simple and yet very powerful concept.
And I LOVE it! ❤
I prefer for my own personal little road trip through life to feel like a Sunday afternoon cruise down Easy Street. But unfortunately sometimes, it feels like the brakes have gone out on my Struggle Bus and I’m barreling out of control down the Highway to Hell (definitely not my favorite feeling . . . )
It’s basically a given that if you aren’t proactive, you end up having to be reactive. Now I don’t know about you, but my reactions aren’t always the smoothest thing about me. Sometimes I’m on point, but a lot of the time, my knee-jerk response to the unexpected, the irritating, the trifle-some, doesn’t always represent me at my finest. On the other hand, I have been known to be a real life rock star when I know what’s coming at me.
While I do like feeling like a rock star sometimes, more importantly here is that I thrive on being prepared. I stress less and accomplish more when I know what’s coming at me.
So there are a couple of choices you get to make here . . .
- You can continue to run amuck on your life’s journey, wasting time and energy, chasing your reactive tail around in unproductive circles. . . . OR . . . .
- You can pull up your proactive panties and get ahead of the rat race for a change.
Which do you choose?
If you want to chat about ways to Get Proactively Savvy, I’m a phone call, an email, an instant message away. Seriously . . . Helping people program a little life GPS is a passion of mine. I’m always looking for new and better ways to tackle my life’s journey, and I’m happy to hop in and ride shotgun on a road trip of yours!
